PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The LOPES Project (LEO Optical Telescope for Space) aims to research and develop an advanced solution based on optical sensors for the monitoring and tracking of space objects in low Earth orbit. This system is designed to feature a wide field of view and advanced data collection capabilities, contributing to improved space observation and security.
ACTIVITIES:
A1 – Requirements Study and Definition
A2 – Hardware and Software Specifications
A3 – LOPES Pilot Development
A4 – Tests and Trials
A5 – Promotion and Dissemination of Results.
A6 – Project Management
OBJECTIVES:
– Development of advanced optical technologies for the precise monitoring and tracking of space objects in low Earth orbit.
– Creation of innovative solutions with a wide field of view to enhance space situational awareness.
– Implementation of data collection systems capable of providing accurate and reliable information for space operations.
– Promotion of sustainable technological development in alignment with environmental and operational best practices.
EXPECTED RESULTS:
- Installation of an optical tracking station for low Earth orbit (LEO) space objects
- Development of an integrated space monitoring infrastructure
- Development of an innovative optical data acquisition and processing system
- Creation of at least 2 new highly skilled jobs
PROJECT PROGRESS:
The LOPES project consolidated its technical and scientific foundation by completing the study, requirements definition, and hardware and software specification activities (A1 and A2), establishing a robust technical and operational baseline to support the start of the pilot’s development, deployment, and on-site integration for the surveillance and tracking of low Earth orbit (LEO) space objects.
